Frequently asked questions
With Spaceship, you can find everything you need to get your web project off the ground. For domains, hosting, email, and various other web services, Spaceship has it all. Virtual Machines now bring you the chance to get more power, flexibility, and control over your hosting plan for an affordable price.
A Virtual Machine (VM) or virtual private server (VPS) is a server within a server. Virtualization technology makes it possible to divide the server’s resources so it can be used by multiple users, who each have operating systems and applications with more independence and control.
Spaceship aims to offer the use of datacenters around the globe so you can get closer to your customers. Right now we have a datacenter in Phoenix, US for our Virtual Machines, but we plan to expand in the future.
Shared Hosting is cPanel-based, while with Starlight we don’t currently sell control panel licenses. This means that for now, we don’t offer migration assistance from Shared Hosting to Starlight Hosting.
You can easily terminate your virtual machine in Starlight Manager by going to your Virtual Machines panel and choosing the three-dot button on the right-hand side. This will give you the option to terminate your server.
You can keep up to date on all the new features and functionality by following our Starlight VM Updates.
The only thing to remember is that the SMTP port 25 will be closed by default for outgoing connections, to prevent spam and other disruptive activities.

But you can still use:

  • SMTP relay services that use different ports.
  • Third-party email services, such as Spacemail.
  • Mail broadcasters, like Mailchimp or Sendgrid.
  • How will I be charged?

Our VM plans have monthly billing cycles with post-payment, so you will pay for the previous month, on an hourly basis. This means you will only pay for the time you use your VM — until it’s terminated.

  • If I use my VM for less than a month, will I be charged for the whole month?

In any given month, you will only pay for the days that you use your virtual server for. This means you won’t be billed for the hours when you don’t have a server.

  • Will I be charged when I enter my credit card?

If you use a credit card to pay for Starlight products, you will be billed monthly and not immediately.

  • Why am I still billed when my Virtual Machine is switched off?

When your VM is switched off you are still billed because it’s still active and the resources are reserved for your use. However, if you terminate your VM then you will not be billed for it.

  • Can I be notified if my VM exceeds a payment threshold?

We do not currently have a system to let you know when you have exceeded the Virtual Machine usage within the limits of your payment plan. However, we intend to make this possible in the near future, so keep checking our Starlight VM Updates.

  • How can I remove my card from the account?

You can remove your card from your Spaceship account, but remember you must always have at least one valid payment method to enable a pay-as-you-go subscription.

Go to Payment Methods, where you can delete your card details manually. You can also go to Subscription Manager to ensure that your subscriptions don’t auto-renew.

  • Can I be refunded for resources I don’t use?

Our billing is post-paid, so you’re only billed for the resources after you use them. This means a refund for unused resources won’t be needed.

Disclaimers

* VMs are charged monthly by the hour. The price depends on the number of hours used during the billing cycle. Note that the number of billable hours varies every month depending on the number of days. For months with 30 days, there are 720 hours.
